Welcome to Plant It Green
Around one third of all food, from farming to distribution, is thrown out in the United States, contributing to billions of dollars around 165 billion to be exact, wasted. Production of all this excess food also uses up 25% of our freshwater. Food waste sitting in landfills also produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. Americans discard so much, yet nearly 50 million Americans are going hungry. Not only that, but much of food production is supplemented with harmful fertilizers, so-called "miracle growers," that can leach into our groundwater and cause algae blooms and damage to water ecosystems: an issue most relevant to us as Long Islanders. So what can we do? Team Plant-It Earth will be collecting all the food waste from local businesses, schools, and markets and turning it into compost. This compost is water-friendly, produces long-term healthy food for plants, and contains NO synthetic chemicals whatsoever. Join us on our journey!

Why?
Waste in landfills release toxic methane into our atmosphere, catalyzing global climate change. While this noxious greenhouse gas traps ultraviolet light in out earth's atmosphere, global temperatures begin to rise at unprecedented rates- destroying vulnerable ecosystems around the world. |
Tremendous amounts of food are wasted every day around the globe. Meanwhile, the world's hungry suffer. This precious organic waste must be put to good use. |
Studies have shown that applying a thin layer of soil on crops can aid in the absorption of carbon from the atmosphere back into the ground. Not only does this provide key nutrients for plant growth into our precious soil, but also reduces one of the greatest contributing greenhouse gases to climate change. It's a win-win! |
INITIATIVES
PROJECT INNOVATE
Creating compost grinders via CAD software and 3D printing that are efficient and acessible to the everyday residential gardner. Creating an effective home-made compost turner takes much effort and thus often deters gardeners from sustainable practices. We seek to fix this situation by creating a cheap and easy-to-use compost grinder... GARDEN GREEN
Creating gardens nationwide and globally with natural gardening practices to preserve the earth and our atmosphere- slowing the pace of global climate change and buildup of greenhouse gases... |
DATA COLLECTION
Conducting experiments (by running simulations, measuring surface area and organic degradation) to see how to most effectively and efficiently compost organic material... PROJECT RIPPLE
Spreading awareness in our our community one event, presentation, and workshop at a time. Any small group of people cannot change the world themselves. It takes collective action to bring about change. By contacting local representatives to host public awareness events, we are able to spread the word to empower individuals through their community and garden... |
Despite those who doubted them, these teenagers have persevered and formed this organization. Resisting all the doubts and skeptics paid off. Now, they have expanded internationally, started hundreds of gardens, and inspired thousands. They are living proof of dedication.
